Why did potatoes become ‘gold’… prices expected to reach Rs 50 per kg!

Date:

(27:04): Potato prices: India ranks second in the world in terms of potato production, with the largest number of potatoes produced after China. Potatoes play a significant role in global food security, aiding in eradicating hunger. However, the recent rise in potato prices has posed challenges for the common man, similar to the previous high prices of onions and tomatoes.

For instance, while tomato prices had once reached Rs 200 per kg, potatoes have now become the center of attention due to their affordability and versatile usage in various dishes. With its low cost, quality, and taste, potatoes have become a precious commodity in the current market, often referred to as “gold.”

It is expected that in the coming months, potato prices may exceed Rs 50 per kg in many areas. Let’s delve into why potato prices are increasing and why there’s speculation about them surpassing Rs 50 per kg. We’ll also explore what this means for farmers.

India’s potato production is mainly centered in Uttar Pradesh (UP), which accounts for about 29% of the country’s production, followed by West Bengal (23%) and Bihar (17%). However, there has been a decrease in potato production in West Bengal compared to the previous year, impacting potato prices nationwide.

The slight decrease in production in West Bengal has led to an overall scarcity of potatoes, resulting in increased prices, especially in regions like Delhi-NCR, where good quality potatoes are nearing Rs 40 per kg. This shortage has also prompted increased potato exports to South India, where prices have soared to Rs 38 per kg.18.2 4 Why did potatoes become 'gold'... prices expected to reach Rs 50 per kg!

The rise in potato prices is expected to continue until July, as potatoes from Uttar Pradesh are primarily consumed in South India, and their availability will only normalize once potatoes from other regions, like Karnataka, start arriving in August. Additionally, cold storages in UP are currently 80% full, further contributing to the ongoing high prices.

Farmers who have stored potatoes in cold storage are hopeful of fetching better prices this year, with expectations of up to a 20% increase compared to last year. Therefore, potato prices are likely to remain elevated until July, benefiting farmers but posing challenges for consumers.
