Ujjain. (16:04): In Ujjain, amidst the rich traditions of the renowned Baba Mahakal, one unique tradition stands strong since the time of King Vikramaditya. On the Ashtami of Chaitra Navratri, Mataji is worshipped here following ancient rituals.
Offering liquor in Devi temples during this time is believed to ward off epidemics from the city. This elaborate Mahapuja spans about 27 KM, with liquor offerings made in 40 temples.
The journey begins at 8 am with liquor offered at the 24 Khambha Mata Temple, attended by saints and Mahants of Niranjani Akhara and other Akharas. This tradition, upheld during Chaitra Navratri, aims at the city’s happiness and peace. The procession, adorned with abundant flowers showered by the city dwellers, receives a warm welcome from the Muslim community at Mahamandaleshwar Mandakini Puri, wearing turbans.
Enthusiastic participation marks this journey, encompassing worship at various Devi and Bhairav temples. The Nagar Puja extends for 12 to 14 hours, concluding with prayers at the Handi Fod Bhairav temple in the Garhkalika area around 9 pm.
