The incident occurred in Mahanadi, within the jurisdiction of the Rengali police station area in Odisha, near Raigarh district. The boat was overcrowded, exceeding its capacity, and was in a deteriorated state. Additionally, it was reported to have carried bikes along with the passengers.
Fifty individuals had boarded the boat from the residence of Gangaram Lohar in Kotarlia, Raigarh district, to visit the Patharseni temple in Panchgaon, Odisha. Tragically, the boat capsized in the middle of the river during the journey.
