Mahasamund. (10:03): The historic marriage of Bhima and Hidimba from the Mahabharata era took place here, with visible evidence still present today. Mahasamund district, located in the eastern central part of Chhattisgarh state, is renowned for its historical temples and cultural heritage. Sirpur village, situated on the banks of the Mahanadi River, is notable for its archaeological remains and ancient temples. The district’s economy revolves around limestone and granite mining, as well as stone cutting-polishing and paddy production. Established on July 6, 1998, Mahasamund district was formerly part of Raipur district.
Legend has it that this area was once ruled by the demon Hidimb, whom Bhima defeated. Impressed by Bhima’s strength and charisma, Hidimba’s sister, Hidimbi, married him. The main highlight of the area is the Khallari Mata Temple, believed to predate the Mahabharata era, located atop a high hill. Numerous pieces of evidence suggest that the Pandavas once dwelled in this region.
