Mahasamund district, located in the eastern central part of Chhattisgarh state, is renowned for its historical temples and cultural heritage. The temple of Mata Khallari, situated atop a high hill, holds historical significance. Formerly known as Khallvatika, Khallari means “destroyer of evil,” which likely influenced the name of the goddess. The temple complex includes shrines dedicated to Chhoti Khallari Mata and Badi Khallari Mata. It is believed that the legendary marriage of Bhima and Hidimbi took place here.
