Raigarh (07/03): The Women and Child Development Department and Kapu Police were informed about a minor girl’s marriage in Salkheta village, Panchayat Gidhkalo.
Upon receiving the information, the Kapu Police and members of the Women and Child Development Department visited the girl’s house. They discovered that a marriage procession was en-route from Sitapur for the same-day wedding.
In the presence of village dignitaries, the police and members of the Women and Child Development Department explained to the girl’s parents and family the harmful consequences of early marriage. They emphasized that marrying minors is illegal and invalid, citing the provisions of the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, which entail punishment and fines for such actions. Their advice influenced the girl’s family, prompting the girl’s father to inform the groom’s side not to proceed with the wedding procession.
The girl’s father pledged to marry off his daughter when she reached a suitable age. Additionally, the Kapu Police advised other families in the village to ensure that their sons and daughters are married only at the appropriate age.
